RMIT Bachelor of Textiles (Design)

The acquisition of leather causes cruel persecution of animals and mainstream processing uses highly toxic substances that cause great harm to workers and the environment. My original intention was to design a fully biodegradable alternative to leather, which is not yet available on the market. However, it is very difficult to maintain the softness and elasticity of leather without the use of chemicals at all. The design goal at this stage is therefore to make people aware of the drawbacks of leather so that they no longer consume it blindly. My design elements are mainly derived from animal bleeding which represents the cruelty they are subjected to; the patterns, colours and textures of snakes which, because of their relative rarity, may be more likely to attract the attention of leather consumers.
