Elspeth Chirmuley

RMIT Bachelor of Fashion (Design)

What We Leave Behind explores heirlooms as a medium for cultural storytelling and connection. I was inspired by personal heirlooms which represent my Indian and English heritage. Drawing on jewellery, photos and clothing pieces, and combining silhouettes and techniques from both cultures, I created garments that were informed by stories of the past. Vintage and deadstock fabrics, as well as traditional hand-stitching techniques have been used to incorporate historical elements. My aspiration is that the garments are unique modern pieces that represent me whilst being influenced by those who came before.
