Rachel Hutchinson

RMIT Bachelor of Fashion (Design)

‘Scenes of the Obscene’ showcases the interplay of materiality and design techniques, seeking beauty in the un-curated and disordered. Expanding from previous work, I’ve been propelled by the ethos of female activists in the music and art realm, notably the Riot Grrrls and Guerrilla Girls. Embracing their influence has anchored this collection to be driven by Vulgarity. Situating this word amidst contrasting themes of feminine resistance and the objectification of women’s bodies, 'Scenes of the Obscene' uncovers the beauty in defiance. Incorporating leather and historical pornographic magazines to symbolically represent women's liberation and prevail limits of taste.
