Daphne Yong Jia Yi

RMIT Bachelor of Fashion (Design)

My collection merges two worlds. Traditional Indonesian drape elements with western street-wear, creating deeper appreciation of my culture in a western fashion context. Utilising locally sourced materials I created natural dyes and print patterns, producing neutral colour palettes appealing to Indonesian street style. Abstracted shapes of the Indonesian moon orchid, white jasmine, and the rafflesia arnoldii flower draws further connections to my rich textile making culture. This collection reconnected me to my heritage in a time when there has been little contact to my roots and I encourage others to revive their traditions in a respectful, appreciative, and creative manner.
